What a tourbillon actually does
It was invented for pocket watches, which sit in one vertical position all day and accumulate positional rate error. Rotating the escapement averages that error out. On a wristwatch, which moves constantly, the practical benefit is small — the tourbillon survives as a demonstration of skill, and it is honest to buy it on those terms.
Skeletonising is subtractive craft
Material is removed from bridges and mainplate until only the structurally necessary metal remains, then every newly created edge is bevelled and polished by hand. The cost is in the hours, and the quality is visible in whether the internal angles are sharp.
What to inspect
Look at the bevels under magnification: crisp internal angles cannot be produced by machine. Check the tourbillon cage rotates smoothly through a full revolution and that the seconds indication on the cage aligns.
Living with one
Openworked dials collect dust and show every fingerprint on the crystal, and legibility is usually poor. These are watches bought to be looked at closely rather than read quickly.
