Caller GMT versus true GMT
A caller GMT lets you jump the 24-hour hand independently — ideal if you stay home and call people abroad. A true or flyer GMT lets you jump the local hour hand in one-hour steps without stopping the movement, which is what you want when you actually travel: land, pull the crown, click the local hour forward, done. True GMTs cost more and are worth it for frequent flyers.
Reading a 24-hour bezel
With a rotating 24-hour bezel you can track a third zone. Align the bezel so the offset between the 24-hour hand and the bezel scale reads your third city. It is a genuinely useful function once learned, and it is the reason the two-tone bezel became iconic.
World timers
A world-time watch carries a rotating city disc reading all 24 zones at once. It is the most elegant solution and the most fragile: the city ring assumes fixed offsets, so daylight-saving changes and political zone shifts have to be read around.
Buying notes
Confirm the independent hour hand actually jumps without moving the minute hand. Check that the date rolls over correctly when the local hand crosses midnight backwards as well as forwards — a badly serviced GMT often fails in that direction first.
