About Panerai
Founded in Florence in 1860, Panerai is best known for the Luminor, Radiomir, Submersible and its crown-protecting lever case. Panerai's cushion cases and sandwich dials were designed for legibility underwater at night for Italian naval divers, which is why the lume is enormous and the dial layout is stripped to essentials. Understanding what a manufacture actually does in-house matters when you buy pre-owned, because it determines how easy the watch will be to service in ten years' time and which parts can still be replaced with factory components.
What to check on a pre-owned Panerai
Sandwich dial alignment and the crown-guard lever action are the two things to check. Cases are large and often polished aggressively; original brushing on the flanks is a good sign. We do all of this before a watch is listed and publish what we find, including the flaws — see Authentication for the full inspection process and our condition grades.
Panerai on the secondary market
Pre-owned Panerai prices sit well below retail, which makes them one of the best ways to own a large, distinctive Swiss watch with an in-house calibre for a moderate sum. Prices move with supply, so we re-price inventory against recent comparable sales rather than list price. If you are considering selling or trading a Panerai, see Sell Your Watch.
How we authenticate every watch
Authentication is not a paperwork exercise. We remove the case-back and verify the calibre against the reference; we check dial printing, hand sets and lume ageing under magnification; we measure timing in multiple positions; we confirm bracelet stamping, end-link fit and clasp codes; and we pressure-test sports references with intact cases. Any watch that fails is returned to its consignor rather than discounted onto the site. Our authenticity guarantee has no time limit.
Condition grading in plain language
We publish one of five grades — unworn, excellent, very good, good, or project — and back each with photographs of the actual watch. Unworn means factory condition with a full set. Excellent means light hairlines only and sharp case geometry. Very good means normal wear with every mark disclosed. Good means visible wear and possibly a previous polish. Project means clearly stated faults, priced accordingly and sold as-is.
Shipping, returns and warranty
Every watch ships fully insured for its declared value with signature required, in discreet packaging, at no cost to you. You have 14 days from delivery to return any watch for a full refund, for any reason, using a prepaid insured label. Mechanical watches carry a 12-month warranty on the movement.
