Column wheel versus cam
A column-wheel chronograph uses a small toothed pillar to route the start, stop and reset commands. It gives the pusher a crisp, light action and is more expensive to make and adjust. A cam or shuttle system does the same job with stamped levers, costs less, and is every bit as reliable — the action is simply firmer. Neither is objectively better; the column wheel is a finishing and feel choice.
Vertical versus lateral clutch
The clutch decides how the chronograph engages the running gear. A lateral clutch meshes two wheels sideways, which can make the seconds hand jump slightly on start. A vertical clutch engages by friction from above, so the hand starts cleanly and the watch can run the chronograph continuously without wearing teeth. Modern integrated calibres almost all use vertical clutches for that reason.
What to check before buying
Run the chronograph through a full cycle: start, stop, reset. The hand must return exactly to zero with no flutter. Watch the amplitude on a timegrapher with the chronograph running — a drop of more than around 50 degrees suggests wear or dry pivots. Pushers should feel identical in weight. Any stickiness means a service is due.
Service cost reality
A chronograph service costs meaningfully more than a time-only service because there are far more parts to strip, clean, lubricate and adjust. Budget accordingly, and treat a chronograph with no service record in the last seven years as a watch with a service already priced in.
