Why the bezel only turns one way
The elapsed-time bezel is set to the minute hand at the start of a dive. If it were bidirectional and knocked accidentally, it could show less elapsed time than has actually passed, which is the dangerous direction of error. A unidirectional bezel can only ever over-state elapsed time, so a knock shortens the dive rather than extending it.
Depth ratings in practice
A 100 m rating suits swimming and snorkelling. 200 m covers recreational scuba comfortably. 300 m and above is specification headroom rather than necessity for most owners. What actually matters is gasket condition: any vintage dive watch should be pressure-tested before it goes near water, regardless of the number engraved on the case-back.
Helium escape valves
A helium escape valve is only relevant to saturation divers living in a pressurised habitat, where helium molecules work into the case and need a release path on decompression. On a recreational watch it is a design signature rather than a functional requirement, and it is one more gasket to maintain.
Lume, bracelets and clasps
Modern Super-LumiNova recharges indefinitely; tritium and radium on vintage watches have decayed and no longer glow, though the patina is prized. On bracelets, look for a diver's extension in the clasp and check stretch between links, which is the usual failure point on a heavily worn tool watch.
