How to spot a fake luxury watch

The tells that actually matter, in the order a professional checks them.
Start with weight and sound
A counterfeit almost always gets density wrong. Solid gold and heavy steel have a specific heft, and a genuine automatic rotor spins with a smooth, quiet whir rather than a gritty rattle. Hold the watch to your ear: a mechanical movement ticks at six to ten beats per second, producing a soft buzz rather than the single tick of a quartz movement.
Read the dial under magnification
Factory printing is applied by pad transfer and is razor-sharp at 10x, with uniform ink density and no bleeding at the edges of characters. Applied indices are set into holes in the dial and sit perfectly perpendicular. Lume plots should be even, level with the index edges, and consistent in colour across every marker.
Open the case
This is the step that settles it. The calibre must match the reference, the finishing must match the brand’s standard, and engravings must be cut rather than laser-etched to a shallow grey. Counterfeits have improved enormously on the outside and improved very little inside.
Check the serial and the paperwork separately
Serial numbers are engraved to a consistent depth and font, and should agree with the production period implied by the case, dial and movement. Papers can be separated from a watch or forged outright, so treat them as supporting evidence, never as proof.
Buy the seller
The most reliable protection is a dealer who opens every watch, publishes what they find, and stands behind it in writing. Our authenticity guarantee has no time limit.
How Chrono24 Watches applies this
Every watch we list is opened and inspected before it appears on the site. We verify the calibre against the reference, examine dial printing and lume ageing under magnification, record timing across multiple positions on a calibrated timegrapher, measure bracelet stretch, and pressure-test sports references with intact cases. What we find is published on the listing, including the flaws, and photographed. You can read the full process on our authentication page.
Buying with confidence
Shipping is free, fully insured and requires a signature on delivery. You have fourteen days from delivery to return any watch for a full refund, for any reason, using a prepaid insured label, and every mechanical watch carries a twelve-month warranty on the movement. Our authenticity guarantee has no expiry date. If this is your first purchase from us, start with how to buy.
