It was invented for pocket watches that sit vertically all day, averaging out positional rate error. On a moving wrist the practical benefit is small; it survives as a demonstration of skill.

Skeletonising is subtractive craft

Material is removed until only structurally necessary metal remains, then every new edge is bevelled and polished by hand. Cost is hours, and quality shows in the sharpness of internal angles.

What to inspect

Crisp internal angles cannot be machine-made. Check the cage rotates smoothly through a full revolution and the seconds indication aligns.

Living with one

Dust shows, legibility is poor, and every fingerprint is visible. These are watches to look at closely rather than read quickly.
