Pilot Watches Explained — How They Work and What to Look For

Pilot watches solve a legibility problem under bad conditions.

The flieger layout

A triangle at twelve flanked by two dots makes orientation instant. Type A dials show hours only; Type B puts minutes on the outer track because navigation depended on minute readings.

Antimagnetism

A soft-iron inner cage shunts magnetic fields around the movement. A magnetised watch runs minutes fast per day and is trivially fixed with a demagnetiser.

Slide-rule bezels

The rotating scale performs multiplication, division and fuel-burn conversion. Printing wears with the bezel, so check the scale is crisp.

Sizing

Historic observation watches were 55 mm because they were worn over a flight jacket. Modern 40–44 mm versions keep the proportions; judge by lug-to-lug.
