Dress Watches Explained — How They Work and What to Look For

A dress watch is disciplined by what it leaves out.

Proportion beats diameter

Under about 10 mm thick slides under any cuff. Lug-to-lug decides whether the watch sits within the flat of your wrist. A 38 mm case with short lugs wears better than a 36 mm case with long straight ones.

Hand-wound or automatic

A manual movement allows a thinner case and a cleaner case-back view; an automatic adds roughly two millimetres. Neither keeps better time.

Dial styles

Sector dials are the most legible classical layout. Enamel never fades but chips. Sunburst finishes shift with light and hide small marks. Each ages differently.

Condition priorities

On a dress watch the dial outranks the case, the reverse of the rule for sports watches. Refinished dials are common and should be priced as such.
