Dive Watches Explained — How They Work and What to Look For
A dive watch is defined by function: unidirectional bezel, deep lume, screw-down crown and a tested case.
Why the bezel turns one way
A unidirectional bezel can only ever over-state elapsed time. If it were bidirectional, an accidental knock could make a diver believe they had more air time remaining than they actually did.
What depth ratings mean in practice
100 m suits swimming, 200 m covers recreational scuba comfortably, and anything beyond is headroom. Gasket condition matters far more than the engraved number: pressure-test any older watch before it gets wet.
Helium escape valves
Only saturation divers in pressurised habitats need one. On a recreational watch it is a design signature and one more gasket to maintain.
Lume and bracelet wear
Modern Super-LumiNova recharges indefinitely; tritium and radium have decayed and no longer glow. On bracelets, check the clasp extension and measure stretch, which is the usual failure point on a worn tool watch.
