Chronograph Watches Explained — How They Work and What to Look For

A chronograph times an interval independently of the running time.

Column wheel versus cam

A column wheel routes the start, stop and reset commands through a toothed pillar, giving a light, crisp pusher action at greater manufacturing cost. A cam-and-lever system does the same job with stamped parts, costs less, and is equally reliable — it simply feels firmer. Neither is objectively superior.

Vertical versus lateral clutch

A lateral clutch meshes wheels sideways and can make the seconds hand stutter on start. A vertical clutch engages by friction from above, starts cleanly, and can run continuously without tooth wear, which is why modern integrated calibres almost all use one.

Testing one before you buy

Run a full start-stop-reset cycle and confirm the hand returns exactly to zero. Watch amplitude on a timegrapher with the chronograph running; a drop beyond roughly fifty degrees points to wear or dry pivots. Both pushers should feel identical.

Service economics

Chronographs cost meaningfully more to service than time-only watches because there are far more parts to strip, clean and adjust. Treat any chronograph without service history in seven years as a watch with a service already priced in.
