Panerai Buying Guide — What to Check Before You Buy Pre-Owned

A practical guide to buying a pre-owned Panerai: what the manufacture actually does, which references matter, what to inspect, and how the secondary market prices them.

What Panerai actually builds

Panerai is best known for the Luminor, Radiomir and Submersible. Panerai cushion cases and sandwich dials were designed for legibility underwater at night. That matters when you buy pre-owned, because a manufacture that controls its own parts supply determines how easily the watch can be serviced in ten years and whether factory components will still be available.

Condition: what to inspect first

Check sandwich-dial alignment and the crown-guard lever action; cases are often over-polished. Beyond that, look at the case flanks under angled light, check the bracelet or strap attachment points for wear, and confirm the crown screws down cleanly with no grit in the threads.

Movement and service history

Ask for the timegrapher readout across multiple positions. Rate is less informative than amplitude: a healthy modern automatic sits comfortably above 270 degrees dial-up at full wind, and a figure far below that points to dry pivots or worn parts. A recent service invoice from the manufacture or a competent independent removes most of the uncertainty from the purchase.

How the market prices these

Prices track supply and sentiment rather than list price, so we re-price inventory against recent completed sales. Documentation, originality and case sharpness move the number more than small cosmetic differences. If you already own one and are considering trading it, see sell your watch.

Living with the watch

Plan for a service every five to seven years, keep the watch away from strong magnets, and have the case pressure-tested whenever it is opened. None of this is expensive if it is scheduled; all of it is expensive if it is ignored.

How Chrono24 Watches applies this

Every watch we list is opened and inspected before it appears on the site. We verify the calibre against the reference, examine dial printing and lume ageing under magnification, record timing across multiple positions on a calibrated timegrapher, measure bracelet stretch, and pressure-test sports references with intact cases. What we find is published on the listing, including the flaws, and photographed. You can read the full process on our authentication page.

Buying with confidence

Shipping is free, fully insured and requires a signature on delivery. You have fourteen days from delivery to return any watch for a full refund, for any reason, using a prepaid insured label, and every mechanical watch carries a twelve-month warranty on the movement. Our authenticity guarantee has no expiry date. If this is your first purchase from us, start with how to buy.
